Garage door opener repair means finding and fixing the fault in the motor unit and its controls: the remotes, wall button, keypad, safety eyes, drive gear, belt or chain, and circuit board. You need it when the door will not respond, stops and reverses, hums without moving, or runs louder than it used to.

The work should start at the door, not the motor. If a spring is weak or a roller is stuck, the opener struggles and can burn out. Manzanita checks that the door moves freely first. Then we test the remotes, keypad, wall button, safety eyes, gears and circuit board until we find the fault.

Signs You Need Opener Repair

  • The door starts down, then turns around and goes back up with nothing in the way.
  • You press the button and hear a hum or a click from the motor, yet the door sits still.
  • One remote works and another does not, or the keypad has stopped answering.
  • A light on the motor unit blinks in a pattern instead of staying on.
  • The chain slaps, the belt slips, or the door jerks as it starts.
  • The door stops short at the top or leaves a gap at the floor.
  • You hear grinding from inside the motor housing.

How We Do Garage Door Opener Repair

  1. Test the door by hand. We pull the release and lift the door to check its balance. A heavy or lopsided door points to springs or cables, and we tell you before touching the opener.
  2. Check the safety eyes. Both lenses are cleaned, the wires are traced, and the brackets are lined up until each light glows steady.
  3. Try every control. We test the wall button, the keypad and each remote, and pair again any remote that lost its code.
  4. Open up the drive. We listen to the motor, inspect the drive gear and sprocket, and set the chain or belt tension.
  5. Reset and prove it. We read any blink codes, set the force and travel limits, and run the reverse test with you watching.

Parts and Options

Most home openers fall into a few types. A chain drive pulls the door with a metal chain. It is tough and simple, but it is the loudest, and the noise carries into a room above the garage. A belt drive uses a reinforced rubber belt in the same rail, so it runs much quieter. A direct drive has a motor that travels along a fixed chain, with very few moving parts. A wall-mount unit sits beside the door and turns the spring shaft, which leaves the ceiling clear.

The parts we replace most often are the plastic drive gear, the sprocket, the safety sensors, the logic board, remotes and keypads. Many newer units also carry a battery backup, so the door still runs when the power is out. When a part for your model is no longer made, we say so and price the options.

Safety

An opener is a strong motor pushing a heavy door, so the safety reverse matters. Once a month, lay a roll of paper towels flat on the floor in the door's path and press close. The door should touch it and go back up. If it does not, stop using the opener and call. Never tape over or unplug the safety eyes to make the door close. Keep remotes away from small children, and unplug the unit before anyone touches the rail or the chain.

Repair, or Time for a New Unit?

Many faults are small: a dirty sensor, a dead remote battery or a worn gear. Those are worth fixing. If the unit is very old or parts are no longer made, we can price a replacement opener next to the repair. If the door was the real problem, spring repair comes first. A new unit also makes sense when you want a quieter drive, a battery backup or a phone app, and the old one would need a costly board.

Opener repairs are priced once we see the unit, because parts vary by brand and model. See the whole price list

What moves the final price is the part, not the visit. A sensor realignment or a remote pairing is quick work. A gear kit means taking the motor head apart, and a logic board depends on what the maker still supplies. If the door itself needs springs, cables or rollers, those lines come from the price list and are added only when you agree.

Opener Repair Across Our Service Area

We handle opener calls in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Encinitas, Leucadia, Solana Beach and Olivenhain. Close to the beach, damp air works on sensor wires and the metal contacts in remotes, so we look at those first. On the longer driveways of Olivenhain, remote range is the usual question. A door that shakes as it moves may need track work too, and a door that will not close at night is a call for emergency repair. The price list lists our starting amounts.

Opener Questions

The door starts down and then goes back up. Why?

Most often the safety eyes are dirty or knocked out of line. Clean the lenses and check that both lights are steady. If they are, the close force may be set too low, or a rail or roller is dragging the door. A binding rail is a job for garage door track repair, and we reset the force on the same visit.

My remote stopped but the wall button works. What now?

Try a fresh battery first. If that fails, the remote may need to be paired again, which we can do on the visit. When several remotes quit at once, the receiver or logic board in the motor unit is the more likely cause. Garage door opener repair covers both, and the price is set once we see the model.

Will you fix an opener that is ten years old?

Often, if the motor is sound and parts exist. A gear kit, a sensor pair or a new board can keep an older unit running. We tell you honestly if a new unit makes more sense, for example when parts are no longer made. Garage door opener installation explains what a replacement looks like.

Can the opener lift the door if a spring is broken?

Do not let it try. Springs do the heavy lifting on a garage door; the opener just steers that balanced weight up and down. With a broken spring the motor strains, the gear can strip and the door can drop. Leave the door closed, unplug the opener if it keeps trying, and book garage door spring repair before any opener work.

Why does my opener work in the morning but not later in the day?

Sun on the safety eyes can blind one lens, so the door refuses to close until the light moves. A loose sensor bracket or a wire that has pulled apart can also act up only at certain times. Shade the lens or call us, and the visit for garage door opener repair starts with those eyes.
